Bobby Lynn Maslen, author of the beloved beginning readers, Bob Books, diedon August 16 in Portland, Oregon. She was 87. Bobby fought Alzheimer’s disease for nearly a decade before succumbing on Thursday. After caring for her for many years at their home, her loving husband John Maslen was her frequent visitor at Regency Park on Barnes Road. Bobby was born in North Carolina. She moved to Providence, RI, where she received a degree from Rhode Island School of Design. She married husband John Ramsey Maslen in 1955. They subsequently moved to New York City, where Bobby designed children’s clothing. In 1959, Bobby and John moved to Tigard, and then Portland, Oregon. While John worked as an architect, Bobby stayed home to raise four children. This started her love of teaching, as she volunteered at the schools all of her children attended. Bobby was hired in 1968 as a Beginning School teacher at Catlin Gabel School. Bobby’s passion for learning lead her to start writing beginning readers with her young students. She soon discovered that using her books, students loved to learn to read. She wanted to share this love of learning with students all over the world, and Bob Books were born. Upon retiring from teaching, Bobby and John started a book business, with Bobby writing and John illustrating. The popularity of Bob Books spread and soon they partnered with Scholastic, who has been their publisher for 25 years. Bob Books have been featured in USA Today, Parenting Magazine, Huffington Post, and Washington Post. They have been on Amazon’s Top 100 Children’s Books for over seven years, and received many accolades, including Editor’s Choice award from Children’s Technology Review, Academic’s Choice Brain Toy Award, Parent’s Choice Approved, Oppenheim Toy Portfolio Best Book Award. There are over 10 million copies of Bob Books in print, which are sold all over the world, as well as Bob Books apps, reading kits, games, flashcards, workbooks, and dolls. Bobby is survived by husband John Maslen, children Lynn Maslen Kertell, David Maslen, Sylvia Maslen Davids, and Paul Maslen, as well as eight grandchildren.
